Networking Empty Spaces

upcoming events for art practitioners and coordinators

As part of its GoCreate programme of continuous professional development, Cumbria Cultural Skills Partnership and The Cumbria Network invite you to two discussion and networking events based on the theme of using empty or ‘third’ spaces.

The events will showcase artists who are using vacant premises to make, exhibit and perform their work, and provide some practical help in how to go about approach landlords, deal with rates, and tips in setting up a project.

Taking place in Barrow on 16
th and Workington 18th February,
these events follow the successful Empty Shops symposium in Carlisle in November (in collaboration with The Cumbria Network, Freerange Artists and brought together by Caroline Dalton).

We are delighted to present a superb collective of both national and local contributors who are actively engaging artists and users in the development of unused spaces.

Our speakers include
Dan Thompson - instigator of the renowned national Empty Shops Network, based in Southampton,
Dimitri Launder - Director of Area10 Project space in Peckham – an international experimental arts space set in a 22,000 square foot warehouse,
Caroline Dalton - who initiated Arcade Arts in Carlisle and is developing projects in Devonshire Arcade, Penrith,
Karen Storr - who successfully set up an exhibition space in an empty shop in Egremont, and
Derek Eland -
who has transferred his studio to the top floor of Council offices in Carlisle, and instigator of the Love Carlisle project.

The events will look at issues specific to each area whilst also encompassing wider ideas about alternative / third spaces in the UK. It is also an opportunity for artists outside of Cumbria to visit and link up with artists and projects around the county, and there will be plenty of space for open discussion and networking.

The events are FREE, but booking is essential due to limited capacity.

Further information and booking is through The Cumbria Network by email, stating your name, address and contact number: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

This is a Cumbria Cultural Skills Partnership Go Create! event organised by The Cumbria Network with support from Allerdale, Copeland and Barrow District Councils, and Arts Council England, The Northern Rock Foundation and Cumbria County Council.
